BMI and BMR are often displayed together in health and fitness tools, but they do not measure the same thing. BMI compares your weight with your height, while BMR estimates the energy your body uses to support essential functions at rest.
Neither number provides a complete picture of your health, body composition, daily calorie needs, or fitness. Used with the right context, however, each can offer a useful starting point.

What does BMI tell you?
Body mass index, or BMI, is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared. For adults age 20 and older, the result is typically placed into a standard weight-status category.
BMI is useful because it is quick, inexpensive, and easy to apply across large groups. At the individual level, it is best treated as a screening measure rather than a diagnosis. It does not directly measure body fat, distinguish fat mass from muscle and bone, show where fat is distributed, or account for laboratory results, medical history, fitness, and health behaviors.

What does BMR tell you?
Basal metabolic rate, or BMR, describes the energy needed to maintain essential functions such as breathing, circulation, temperature regulation, brain and organ activity, and cellular maintenance. Online calculators cannot directly measure this energy use; they provide an estimate based on information such as weight, height, age, and sex.
True Fit uses the Mifflin–St Jeor predictive equation. Although commonly described online as a BMR equation, it was developed to estimate resting energy expenditure. The result is still an estimate—not a personalized calorie prescription and not the amount of energy you use over an entire day.

Why can two people have similar BMI values but different BMR estimates?
BMI only uses height and weight. If two adults have the same height and weight, their BMI values will be the same—even if their ages, body composition, training histories, or health circumstances differ.
A BMR equation uses more inputs. Age and sex affect the estimate, so two people with the same BMI can receive different BMR results. Even when the equation inputs match, actual resting energy use can still differ because predictive equations cannot capture every biological and environmental factor.
BMI and BMR answer limited questions using limited inputs. Neither number should be treated as a verdict about your body or health.
How to use BMI and BMR responsibly
- Start with the question you want to answer. Use BMI when you want a general weight-for-height screening value. Use BMR when you want an estimate of resting energy use.
- Remember what the formula cannot see. Neither calculation directly evaluates your overall health, fitness, body composition, dietary quality, medical conditions, or personal circumstances.
- Look for patterns instead of chasing precision. Calculator results are estimates. Day-to-day decisions should also consider energy, performance, recovery, hunger, consistency, and longer-term progress.
- Use qualified support when the stakes are higher. A health care professional can interpret medical concerns, while a knowledgeable trainer can help translate appropriate goals into realistic training habits.
Can BMI and BMR be used together?
They can be viewed together, as long as their roles stay separate. BMI may provide a broad screening reference. BMR may provide a starting estimate of resting energy. Together, they still do not create a complete health assessment or an individualized nutrition plan.
For example, a trainer might note a client’s BMI while also considering assessments, progress photos, strength, mobility, goals, preferences, training history, and relevant guidance from the client’s health care team. A resting-energy estimate may help begin a nutrition conversation, but progress and real-world feedback remain important.
BMI supplies a weight-for-height reference. BMR supplies a resting-energy estimate. Neither replaces a medical assessment, body-composition measurement, or individualized plan.
